Herc'd Panels

Herking the Rockers..

I noticed several months ago, that my rocker panels had started to develop some bubbles in them. Because of the fact that a thick rocker protecting paint had already been added, I knew the problem would be much worse then appeared.

A quick trip to the local K-Mart provided the solution. In the auto department, I picked up a quart of Herculiner, a pint of Bondo, a roll of tape, a can of Primer, a pack of sandpaper, and from the Paint department, a trim kit. Walking out with a grand total of $50+.

Upon returning home, a dug into the tool box for my body hammer and sanding block. With a couple of smacks of the hammer, the rocker began to crumble. As suspected, the problem was much worse beneath the surface.

When all was said and done, I had removed a six inch section of the rear rocker.

After removing the rusty metal and I sprayed the area with a rust inhibiting Primer to help prevent the return of the problem. Because of the size of the hole, I inserted a metal mess section into it so that the filler would have something to attach to. Applying several lite coats, and smooth between, slowly build the rocker back out to original level and shape.

Once the area is fairly smooth, apply another coat of primer. Remember that this is going to be covered by a thick, textured product and it does not have to be perfect.

Time to apply the Herk.....

This product is meant to stick to any surface and not be removed, so BE CAREFUL, Do not get it any where it was not attended to be. Please wear a pair of rubber gloves and but down a drop cloth or newspaper.

Applying the herk is simple. Mix it very well, the grit will be settled in the bottom of the can. Do not use anything that you want to keep.

Tape off all moldings and areas that you do not want it on. Use a small brush to apply to the lower lip and around the edges of the molding. Once you have this done, just roll it on. With a quart can, I was able to apply 2 coats to each side and have enough left over to make a mess in the bottom of my trash can. Good Luck..

BTW...I only found one item that would remove the Herk from my skin..BRAKE CLEANER...So be careful not to get it on your skin.
